Get rid of default categories

Hi,

I just wondered if it is possible to hide or get rid of Smumug's default categories. I find this to be very annoying when creating galleries.

Many thanks

It isn't possible to remove smug's default categories.

The real problem is that you can't rename them.

It is especially annoying considering that categories and sub-categories is the only way to have something equivelent to albums and sub-albums. I think that the latter concept is much easier to grasp for novices.

I would like to use smugmug for a scouts group to upload their huge collection of pictures. So, there would be multiple people who potentially will upload pictures. So if it is not clear from the start what categories have been created for our internal use, things will get mixed up, and pictures will end up in categories that do not make any sense for our purposes.

I also looked at the alternatives, e.g. Flickr and Picasa web albums, which are not bad, but lack the personalisation features (full layout customisation, ...) that exist in smugmug. I like Flickr's organisation tools though. Picasa does not have any sub-albums feature. For both alternatives, there is no easy way to download entire albums. For Flickr, it's even super heavy to download a single picture.

Yes, you do need to adjust to the terminology.

But I really don't understand why you seem to think categories and subcategories are limited to the categories that smugmug created. If you look at my site, I think you'll find only 1 smug-created category name. You can create your own - just ignore those supplied by smugmug if they don't meet your needs. I would think that you could inform the individuals who will be uploading photos what gallery you want them to use (or what cat/subcat). If they make a mistake you can just move the photos.

Sure thing. But I would have to explain each time a new person is in charge for uploading the pictures. Not to complicated, I agree, but still... Well, I may have to consider this and make a decision soon enough.

Many thanks for your help. This friendly and responsive forum already is aclear + for smugmug ;)

Where does the default category list appear, so I can make that list available to folks who will be uploading. (creating an internal use/don't use list for our organization)

    Thanks,
