I'm considering using SmugMug and would like to know if there is a limit on how many albums or categories or sub categories I can create for a single account.

The only limit is how much organizational headache you can put up with. In other words, there is no limit. :-}

However SmugMug doesn't let you hide their numerous "built-in" categories, so if you add a bunch of your own categories, you'll constantly be faced with wading through their built-ins. I wish there was a way to delete them. I think I filed a verbal feature request for this when I lunched with the boys, will have to see if I ever officially filed one.

Likewise, certain actions that you might want to perform on many albums at once (like changing categories, sub-categories, changing themes, etc.) are cumbersome to do once your number of albums begins to grow.

Third-party tools like Star*Explorer, SmugBrowser, and NitroDesk make this a little easier, but it's still a pain.

Which is not to say that this is an easy problem to solve. I find Flickr's Organizr pretty slow and klunky, but from a UI perspective it is a step in the right direction, I think.
