Password protecting question

Not sure if this would be the right category, i apologize if its not.
Can you password protect a folder on a mac and then open it using the password, on a pc?
I tried it and I can password protect it in the mac save to a disc but it's saved as a .dng file so I can't open it on a pc..
Can anyone help?? Thanks in advance.
