Caracara nest building in Viera

This year, the Crested Caracara are building a nest in a palm tree just south of the entrance ramp to the Viera Wetlands.

Today both the male and female were busy collecting nesting material from the side of the dike road where the wild hogs had tore up the grass the night before. They would collect the material then fly to the nest deep within a palm tree. From there they would fly to a pine tree (often used by Eagles) to survey the territory, before flying back to the dike road for more nest material.

Fun to watch behavor.....

Nice work Ira. I need to get back down there but the change back to standard time has messed me up with sunrise being an hour earlier this week :D

Very nice. One of my many "favorite" birds. That last one is very nice.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Great series of shots. One day I hope to be able to photograph one of these raptors. Well done.
