Strange hit count

I've been seeing some strange numbers in the stats pages for a few of my galleries, and I don't see any obvious explanation. As I understand it, I get a hit every time an image is loaded in a page, and a view when an image is viewed in a size larger than Thumbnail, e.g. when a thumbnail is clicked.

So it seems like the number of hits for the thumbnails should all be fairly even, varying with number of page loads for the bigger galleries, and screen resolution on the viewer's system.

I have a gallery, linked below, that contains 33 fractal images. The stats for that gallery show 2 or 3 hits for 31 images, 102 for one, and 145 for the other. How can this be? That doesn't seem possible. Is my understanding completely wrong?

I think I know what might be causing the behavior I saw. Two days ago I noticed that one of my images was in the daily most popular list, and now that image has the same kind of excessive numbers. I was so surprised to see one of mine on that list, I hadn't even considered that as a possibility, but it makes sense, That's a way for one thumbnail to get lots of hits without affecting the ones around it.
