RED Digital Camera announced - up to 261mp!
[FONT=Verdana, sans-serif]I thought this might be interesting for some people here, RED has just announced there new Scarlet and Epic lines including several models that will take Canon and Nikon lenses, and will autofocus I believe. There is an option to attach a grip, so you can effectively make a "DSLR" out of the basic "brain" unit (as it's called). I especially like the idea of the digital 6x17 sensor (261mp!). I took some stills of the main bits of the RED brochure which I thought were pretty interesting:

They're fugly as hell but if they deliver as promised in terms of MP and DR, they should sell well in the professional segments......
The form factor appears to be heavily weighted to video, though I think they have not done a good job of showing basic SLR configurations.
Not sure I will ever go for a electronic viewfinder.
Its a tad pricy too

Tad pricey, not really when you are talking a 3K video camera that can shoot high-quality stills. The Canon fixed-lens XHA1 (1K) is over $3400 and can't be upgraded at all.
I'm still waiting for the preorder button to appear on the Red site so I can have a cam in 2010
Well, then it is probably me not understanding how it all works, but their page listing all the bits show the Scarlet S35 Mysterium-X Brain, with mounts, is $7,000. Then you have to purchase battery, storage, viewfinder or remote at least. The FF version starts at $12,000 for sensor and mount only.

That's what everyone said about the RedOne too and I saw it and it was amazing.
You know what video people are saying about the 5DMkII? The same thing you guys are saying about the Scarlet.
The 5DII is a still camera that can do nice video, the Scarlet is a video camera tha can do nice stills. That's the truth. Nothing can do everything perfectly for the price point everyone wants.
I'm planning on picking up a 5DII and a Scarlet - hey guess what, I can use all my canon lenses with the Scarlet and the same with the CF cards.
The Scarlet (even the $2500 body) can shoot at 120 FPS - after all the accessories you need to make it work (lens, battery, CF component) it still should come in at under $5k. You won't find one other video camera that shoots 3K (3x more resolution then a standard HD camera) at this price point (most 1K HD cams start around $3k with 1/3" chips) and is instantly adaptable to growing needs.
I am not 100% sure, but I beleive all the bodies come with a built-in LCD - thought based on today's specs that may not be the case anymore. I am pretty sure the "body only" does come with a battery, the batteries in the acc. list are the grip/battery and the dual battery attachment. Of course, I'm not employee or insider so I could be reading it all wrong.
You would have to buy a lens or an adapter (to use your canon/nikon lenses), the adapter is the least expensive way to go of course. I think the CF module would also need to be purchased to start shooting. Based on current acc. prices, this would be something like $1000 added on top of the body, giving you a total around $3500. That is very cheap for what this camera can do.
I'm saying all this based on the 2/3" chip version. Of course the price jumps significantly for the larger chips. Remember, even the FF 5DMkII doesn't shoot video on a 35mm chip (just uses part of it). I would not trade my still cam in for the Scarlet, just like I wouldnt trade a Scarlet video cam in for a 5DII - they are not created for the same purpose.
You're not the first to make that accusation. The same was said about the RED ONE camera in 2006.

As awesome as it is now, the red one took over a year and 15 (up to 17 now i think) firmware/hardware upgrades before it was really ready for primetime use. It still takes two and a half minutes to go through it's boot sequence before you can start shooting with it. And to think I get mad when using my old 10D that takes 3 seconds to turn on.
Red are an odd company, they produce some seriously awesome gear and some of the most over the top hype at the same time.
