if you don't mind going a little longer on the wide end, check out the tamron 28-75mm f2.8, i love it. i know i keep promoting this lens, but it's really that good. check the fred miranda reviews, the tamron has better reviews.

Fredmiranda doesn't have the newest version of the Sigma up yet, I don't believe (it is marked MACRO in addition to all the other DG EX alphabet soup), so I think some of the reviews aren't appropriate for the current one. My biggest beef with the design is that it lacks the HSM. I think if it had full-time manual focusing it would be a more attractive lens to me. I have looked at both this lens and the Tamron, and the build quality of the Sigma is definitely better - less plastic-feeling and more solid. The flip side is that the Sigma is a lot heavier (according to the manufacturer's respective websites, 500 grams for the Tamron, 700 for the Sigma).

I do also wish it had HSM, such a shame they didnt include it.....i would happily pay 100 dollars more for FTM and they would certainly be an extremely attractive option over the 24-70L.

I dont mind heavy lenses.....im kind of sick of cheap feeling and looking lenses to be honest.

Yes, to me the FTM is a huge feature, and one of the biggest advantages Canon has over competitors. It's a shame that Sigma isn't including it in all of their new lenses.
