Transparent background for Merchandise?

I want a white coffee mug or a Tshirt from smugmug merchandise with a cutout image (ie not a rectangle). What is the best way to perpare the image?

jpg with white background
or
png with transparent background

I would hope the latter so it can be used on black mugs, too.
