I've seen a lot of post and I'm still not sure. What does it really take to do IR with a 20d?
Thanks

The IRs you have probably seen are from cameras that have been modified for IR. The company that does this is MaxMax, they currently convert the Canon 300D, but I am not sure about the 20D. Andy is the best source on these matters, hopefully he will chime in with some info.

yer so right, david
the 20d doesn't do ir any worse or better than any other dslr, which is to say, not so good imo. you have to put an ir filter on, shoot long exposure on a tripod - usually this results in muddy low contrast images with blurry leaves on the trees..... it's also hard to shoot becuase you compose and focus w/out the filter, then screw the filter on... and you guess at the exposure time...
far better results can be had from a sony f717 or 828, with, as demonstrated in this thread. these cameras (and certain dimages and a few other digicams) are better suited... the sony esp has a nightshot mode which makes shooting ir a breeze.
the pinnacle of ir performance, imo, is a modded camera. i've shot with a modded 828, by maxmax and it's sweet. you can search dgrin for maxmax, you'll find a bunch of posts i made on this camera... still, i wanted more. in particular, i wanted noise free skies... so i had maxmax mod a canon rebel, and now i can shoot with a low-noise dslr sensor, with my choice of canon glass. i'm in the process of putting this camera through it's paces, and will have a review of it posted here on dgrin soon.
i've posted a few irs from the canon rebel modded camera, the one i'm most pleased with thus far is right here.
cheers
