SDHC cards provide more memory than SD cards (HC = high capacity - 2GB and above, I believe). The cards have the same physical characteristics, but SDHC cards cannot be used if the camera firmware does not allow the camera to address the larger memory size.

According to Canon, the A540 allows SD cards only, and there have been no later firmware updates to enable use of SDHC cards.

I bought a 4 gig SDHC for my wife's point & shoot. It works fine in the camera but my card reader will not read it. I have to plug the camera into the computer via the USB port. Thats OK but the camera must have a fully charged battery as sometimes it takes a while to down load all the photos. That is the reason I got a card reader in the first place. I am thinking about trying to sell the 4 gig SDHC and get two 2 gig cards.

New card readers can be had for amazingly little now.

In fact, I bought a couple of SanDisk SDHC cards from B&H a while ago and they came with a SDHC --> USB converter/reader. No surprise, it works. The real surprise is how fast they download using this little converter/reader.

I don't find one there now, but I did find this at NewEgg.com - not real cheap, but not bad either if you have a need for more memory in addition to a SDHC reader.

BTW - I have no connection with NewEgg other than being a satisfied customer.

There's another recent thread on sd vs sdhc in the cameras thread too.

Newegg has some GREAT prices on sd cards both 2g and 4g. I have some Kingston 2gs which are working well in my xsi, and also use Transcend 4g both in my digital recorder and Canon pointnshoot. They've all been fine.
