Shay already posted an excellent take on this, here are few of my attempts
(Sorry, Shay, the one with the sun in your eye didn't come out good enough:-)

Sundog#1 (I was also trying to use Michiel's patented "skewed" approach:-)

Sundog #2 (more classical angle:-)

Sundog #3 (found another shade:-)

All taken with Sony 828, jpeg.
As you would expect, there was some noise, some lens glares, and some CA, but CS2 is a great pleasure when dealing with them..

Cheers!:1drink

    It constantly amazes me
What different views of Yosemite we all had. You saw a sundog? Wow... I saw the tic-tac-toe condensation trails in the sky, but not the sundog!

Glad you got these -- I must have been on the road from Oakhurst to the Valley... :):

Is that what it's called, a sundog? I like the third one, Nikolai, really nice. I'm trying to remember the science behind it - this is the first one I've seen in the daytime, I've only seen them in moonlight until now.
    Sid.

It sure does look that way, doesn't it:-)?

Actually, all three were taken about noon Saturday, if it helps..

I didn't know the term until I heard some of my teammates called it. When I got home I looked it up and it was a proper word to use:-).
I never saw this phenomenon that bright myself. The whole place seem to be some sort of a rainbows magnet:-)

Very nice. I like your mixing it up with the angled shot. My favorite is the third one. Great framing.

As Jules at STf pointed out, this is called 22 Degree Halo and supposed to be a pretty rare phenomenon:-)

I also like #3 most, even though it's only 1/3 of the full circle..

Ahhh....cool! You got it! I remember us all straining our necks and lying on the ground to try and get a shot of this....Mine had a lot of lens flare in it.. Nice job.

And your "smooth stream" shot (the one you were taking when I shot you:-) came out so much better than mine.. Damn, I need a better gear before the next shootout..

You got some great photos with that Sony! Your sundog definately came out better than mine:

    The reason is simple:

I took the only shaded spot from which that halo could be properly exposed:D
