problem uploading large batches

Recently, I've been experiencing problems uploading large batches (approximately 1000 photos at 5MB each ... total ~5GB) using the standard uploader. It would show small blank icons of the images along with their filenames in the window. I click UPLOAD and it starts. Several minutes later (sometimes after 3-5 images are uploaded, sometimes after 30-40 images are uploaded) the browser (most current Firefox v2) would crash. I've tried this on 3 computers, all with FF.

However, if I go and use the old "retired" Drag & Drop uploader, it does not have any problems and all the 1000+ images upload just fine.

Can the problem be with the new uploader trying to display thumbnails of each image before uploading them? Can that cause the browser to crash? Is there a way to prevent the new uploader from trying to render the thumbnails when there are that many images to upload? :scratch

NOTE: each of the 3 computers have 3GB of RAM, running XP. The CPUs are Pentium-4 2.8GHz, Pentium-D 3.0GHz, and Core2Duo T7500.

Internet connections: FiOS 20/5 and RoadRunner. It happens with both.

Suggestions? Of course, I can just go and use the retired version, but will that be around forever?

BTW ... Happy Thanksgiving.

    Mike.

Thanks for the reference to the 3rd party program. I am aware of its existance but have no need for it right now.

Not that I have anything against Star*Explorer, but I am concerned that something smugmug publishes for simple uploads, should work for large batches. Especially when their "retired" version worked and still works.

You can also try Send to SmugMug.

    http://www.shahine.com/garage/content/SendToSmugMug.aspx

    It's free (donations accepted).

I've used it to upload thousands of photos at a time to a given gallery and it works. When it's done, you will prompt you to retry failed uploads. It's been working great for me for the last couple weeks.

My personal opinion, which you don't share, is that you are absolutely crazy to depend upon Internet Explorer (or Firefox) add-ons to upload large batches of photos to Smugmug.

If you want to guarantee that your photos get uploaded successfully, then, in my opinion, you must depend upon a third party uploader. Adding on a piece to Internet Explorer is just a band aid, to get your uploading done, esepcially when you are doing it in large batches.

    Again, that's just my opinion.

I found with large batches of photos, the add-on uploaders just don't cut it.
