It is a well respected monitor but you should be aware that this model was the subject of a panel "lottery" back in 2006. You could obtain it with either a S-IPS panel or a MVA panel under the same model number.

There has been a lot posted on this situation in the DPreview "PC Talk" forum. I'll try to summarize it.

There is a product label on the shipping box and the back of the monitor.

The back of the monitor will look something like this:

The label on the shipping box will have info like this:
    Product number: EF227A8#ABA
    Part number: EF227-60001
    Description: HP Monitor(HSTND-2101-G)
    Mfg date: July 2008
    Spare number: 451133-001
    Rev. GSM003
The point of general consensus is that if the revision number is GSM000, GSM001, GSM002, GSM003 - then you will likely have a S-IPS panel as indicated by the "GSM".

If the revision number is AMM000, AMM001, AMM002, AMM003 - then you will likely have a MVA panel as indicated by the "AMM".

But!! this is not 100% certain because there have been conflicting posts.

    Here is a reference post:

I know of a Canadian online reseller that claims to have stock:

    http://www.directdial.com/EF227A8%23ABA.html
    http://www.directdial.com/EF227A4%23ABA.html

You'll notice that there are two different "product" numbers referenced in the dpreview post. I believe, with a moderate level of confidence but not 100% certainty, that this is an internal HP code system for volume cost discounts. The EF227A8 code refers to "Smartbuy" which I've seen used on several other HP monitors, always with a lower price than the alternate code.

    Hope this helps!
