It would appear that you are not getting the true detail of the compound eyes on this until about 3 - 3.5 x. Is this the norm with flies in general?

By my reckoning, the body length of the specimen, using pic 1 @ 2x, makes it about 6.5mm long ... which is considerably bigger / not far off double the size of those that I typically find / take pics of in our kitchen...
Is this associated with where you're living, or is my maths up the creek ?

The size 1000x723 are fine, I wouldn't recommend you go any bigger than that.
