Domain Name Configuration to Smugmug

Per my request, the CNAME of my domain (www.femson.com) was directed to point to my smugmug site, (femson.smugmug.com) by the support team about 3 days ago, so that I don't have to type www.femson.smugmug to get to my site anymore. The change was made and I was told it takes about 24 hrs for such a change to happen; it is well over 24hrs now and it still not working. Got back with them and here is what they sent back to me:

Hi,
The CANE has been set up on your account as requested;
www.femson.com. CNAME 14400 femson.smugmug.com.
http://www.dnswatch.info/dns/dnslookup?la=en&host=www.fem...
You may want to contact smugmug.com and make sure it is configured on their end in your account to direct to your account on their site.

However, I logged in to my smumug Control Panel and tried to change the domain name to www.femson.com but it would not take. Don't know what to do from this point on, pls help.

You sure they didn't tell you to use domains.smugmug.com instead of your site name? Try that... might work a little better for ya.

But the purpose of the purpose of the change is that I would be able to use my site address, www.femson.com as opposed to to using femson.smugmug.com.....not clear about this, please advise....

You don't point your domain to femson.smugmug.com. It needs to be pointed to domains.smugmug.com as the pilotdave noted.

Details on this help page - http://www.smugmug.com/help/professional-accounts. Don't know if you have a power or pro account, but the setup for the domain is the same in both.

Denise and Dave are correct on this. I know that it does not make sense to not use yournickname.smugmug.com URL. But that is simply not how it works. You must use domains.smugmug.com

Change it and you will be working in no time. If you need help, please contact me on the help desk.

Can someone explain why sometimes my search results show my domain name and sometimes carolineshipsey.smugmug.com.
Is there something wrong in my configuration settings ?

There is nothing wrong with your domain settings that I can see. The yournickname.smugmug.com address as well as your custom domain address both work as they should. Your SmugMug address is often picked up first, and because of SmugMugs popularity will often be listed high. Your site as a subdomin of SmugMug inherits that popularity.

The best way to get your custom domain listed higher is to use the tips found here: http://wiki.smugmug.net/display/SmugMug/Maximize+Search+Engine+Findability They really do work.

I am just happy to get high search results using either URL. But, I understand that users want their domain name to show up in searches. Use the tips above.
