Pit Candids

I'm going to be taking pictures at a race track on Saturday and I have had a request for some candid pit shots. I have a 70-200 2.8, will this do? I have seen some awesome candids and everytime I try I fail miserably. Any tips or pointers?
I hate throwing a camera and lens in someones face as they prepare to race but I do know I have to do what I have to do to get the job done.

A 24/70 or 16/24. The closer you get to the subject the more people you EXCLUDE. There are people all over the place getting in your way with a long lens
My .02
Good luck

Thanks for you .02 as you put it. I do have a nifty fifty 1.8 but not sure how that will work with no USM.
Do I want to shoot wide open to get the shallow DoF or is there another technique? Most of, if not all of, the shots are going to be at sundown or shortly there after with a minimal amount of light.
