Does anyone know how Smugmug stacks up against Picasaweb? I know Smugmug pretty well, but don't know Picasaweb at all so when someone recommends Picasa over Smugmug because it's free, I don't really know how to respond.

Any thoughts?

I used Picasa until I ran out of space there. It's nice if you use gmail a lot because everyone on your gmail can be easily given access.

However, they have a space limit, and they charge for the extra space yearly. Which means they're more expensive in the long run, which is why I went with smugmug.

Flickr may actually be the cheapest for people who just want to throw photos somewhere and don't need a lot of features but I really dislike their free version limits.

Picasaweb has an OK user interface, flickr has a pretty bad user interface (and display of photos) but a great community. If you want to display your photos in a good way SmugMug is better. Ipernity is a more international version of Flickr,

SmugMug obviously looks better and gives more possibilities. But for me, as a person who shoots both photos and short videos, one significant advantage of Picasaweb is that it plays videos in slideshow mode. Unfortunately, so far SmugMug doesn't have slideshow mode that would play videos, so there's no easy way to watch an album that contains both photos and videos. But this should matter to you only if you have a habit of shooting videos.
