1) Photos are big, easy to see
2) Photos are numbered -- easy to reference when you're e-mailing or chatting with friends ("Check out the boot on the wall in #14!")
3) Simple. No JavaScript, no Flash, no nonsense, just photos
I know so much time is spent developing flashy slideshows (ahem) or layouts, but sometimes, it's nice when it's all about the photos.
Of course it helps that these photos are so compelling.
