Had an idea after work last night and figured it was worth a shot today. Set up a few of my daily tools and tried playing around with DOF. Can't decide on a favorite amongst these and am open to comments/suggestions on improving the shot.
Thanks!
E

ps - bonus points for guessing what my specialty is :wink

I also like #1, although perhaps with just a HINT more depth of field for the background items?

And I'm wracking my brain to decide specialty. Pediatrics? Phlebotomist? Nurse? Er....?

Thanks guys. The DOF decisions were tough. I didn't bring my tripod in and was relying on available light - mix of window side light and fluorescent. That limited me somewhat as I really couldn't go above f/4 and stay at reasonable shutter speeds even at iso 400. There's also a fine line between getting these items all in focus given the extension of the stethoscope and enabling the background to blur as I think it would detract greatly from the shot. I might try a reshoot and reposition the items closer to the camera to see if I can go up to f/5.6 or so. The Canon actually did surprisingly well this time with auto WB so I was pleased on that count.
And, Aaron, no pain is involved heremwink.gif. Divamum...keep guessing...

    Well done Mark!
Those black things are nose speculumsrolleyes1.gif
They actually have the appearance of sunglasses in that one shot which I thought was kind of cool.
The needles are tiny and are used for giving immunotherapy (allergy shots)
The white items in blue plastic are for scratch testing.
So now that the guessing game is done, is #1 a viable candidate or does it need work to keep the items all within the DOF???
    Thanks,
    E

You know, when back I did allergy shots, the serum came in little glass vials and they gave me those, told me to go get some superfine sharps and I had to load up and do it from scratch!!!! ;-/

Damn Pyro...had to go ahead and stir things up huh???mwink.gif
I actually like those more than 1 with 5 having the slight edge.
Now that 'guess the doc' is over, any other thoughts on the best of the series and/or need for a reshoot?

I like 1 and 3. I'm not liking the ones with a lot of items in focus and too much empty space. How about black and white?

I really like the scene in #3 with maybe a slighlty longer dof (that would include the alcohol bottle). What about different backgrounds too ? On a complete metallic one, or on white tiled one rather than the brown ? Just an idea...

    Thanks for the added comments.
I was going to try using one of those rolling stainless steel items in a reshoot on Tuesday. Still trying to figure out if a still life needs to have all items in focus or can benefit from a smaller DOF...

#5 but with a little cropped of from the bottom.

I like the lighting in it. When I look at that photo, I really feel like I am in a dr's office! :D

I totally agree. I really like the lighting in #5, it jumped out at me immediately....It doesn't feel like I am looking at a picture; it feels like I am sitting in my chair looking at what is in front of me, if that makes any sense at all. Laughing.gif.

I'm a complete pain... I want the fstop in between... ;)

I like the clarity of these - the white background makes the setup pop more - but getting that balance between where it's sharp and not is tricky. Of these, I think I like #1 the best. thumb.gif
