Pileated stopped by today
I was vacuuming and looked out at the feeder to see him:
Through glass (didn't dare open the door). Am amazed at the detail.
And as he flew away (this one makes me motion sick for some reason) - I love the feathers of his tail:

It's better to be hated for who you are than to be loved for who you're not.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

He and his mate must have a nest somewhere close, as I've been lucky enough to see them about once a month all year.
I am shocked at how large their wingspan is.
And 'BBIF' makes my hubby laugh.

Maybe one day I'll be outside with the camera when he stops by!

Yes, they are interesting birds. They have very large feeding range needs so they are a bit hard to find. As I mentioned I think that a pair nests close by as I've seen them fairly regularly.
Yep, motion for sure, and really small amount of the bird in focus - kind of interesting, but makes me queasy.

Ramblings About Me
I am really excited about the whole thing. And a bird feeder has been my dream. I leave the door open to the backyard, most of the time, our a/c is on its last legs, and the dogs do like the door open........as do the cockroaches who fly in. Nasty big things this year.
Through that open door is my window to a beautiful world out back. I think. And right in my line of sight is the perfect place for a bird feeder, like yours, on a stand. The birds do not seem afraid of my dogs the way they used to be, so I am hoping to see some great ones. And maybe get off a shot or two.
You have been an inspiration with your bird feeder. And the photography you do there. Are the sports over? I thought we, and the birds, had lost you to that.
Someone suggested last week that I do dog agility events for some extra money. I told them that was an idea, but didn't think I could work it in right now. It seems so time consuming!
I love that bird. Beautiful shot, sharp and great colors.
I think there is a bird nest up on my roof, two stories. There is a little aggressive bird flying over where I sit here for the last few days. I can't see the nest, though, and I am not going up there.
ginger Thank you for posting and sharing. Please convey our thanks to the bird.
Thanks!
You will love the feeder. I keep seeing new species every week. Yesterday I stood outside and closed my eyes and just listened to the variety of bird songs. Absolutely amazing. And fascinating - so man species to learn about - their colors and habits. And hopefully with all of the nesting going on around me, I'll see chicks from one or the other.
Soccer is full swing again, so 3 games a week, but that won't stop me from watching for nature shots around my yard. I think that is why I moved here - so I could grab quick shots like that between games, rather than have to go find them in my 'not so free' time.
Enjoy

Love the shot of him flying away! My pileated has been hiding lately...but i hear him out there! I'll get him again!
I am thinking that these two (I got the female in the winter) are nesting somewhere near here - they have ahuge range and are really territorial - I'd love to know where!
Thanks for commenting.
