What do you mean by you plan to go full frame? I'm kind of looking for a D300 with a 18-200 mm AF-S DX VR II Lens. I'd prefer to buy brand new but "gently" used may be an option at the right price and I guess it depends on what you used the camera for and where you are located. At Amazon.com right now you can get the D300 body only for $1,200 and a place in Illinois (that is my location) called Foto Connection, they are asking for 1,179. I know you don't list the lens I typed but I guess I can buy the camera body only and purchase the lens elsewhere. Or I'll have to do research, and maybe your lenses are better I don't know. Again, I know that I want a D300 but I am shopping around right now for price options.
Thank you for your time,
Margaret

It's all about the moment...
What Kimi means by this is that the D300 as a 1.5x crop body. Which means that the physical size of the sensor in the body is 1.5 times smaller than a 35mm (film/Full Frame [FF]) camera body. On these body types, Nikon (and Canon who calls it EF-S vs Nikon's DX) has special lenses that only fit on crop body cameras. So the benefit to these bodies are for longer focal lengths. For Ex: On a FF (or 35mm) camera body, a 200mm lens has a focal length of 200mm, but this same lens on a crop body camera (ex: the D300) now the focal length is 350mm (200 x 1.5 = 350). So you get a bit more "zoom" from a crop body. The downfall however is in the opposite side of the spectrum. If you're using wide angle lenses that is. On a FF (or 35mm) body a 14mm lens is 14mm, but this same lens on a crop body (again like the D300), now has an actual focal length of 21mm (14 x 1.5 = 21). But they make corrections for this in new lenses that only fit the crop body cameras, for example you could get a 10mm-22mm (in Canon's case, not sure what the Nikkor equivilent is) which when mounted on a crop body (because this EF-S lens will ONLY mount on a crop body) now becomes (in Canon's case it's a 1.6 crop factor vs. Nikon's 1.5) a 16mm-35.2mm. So now you're back out to that wide angle. But now that you have that special crop body lens, it won't work on a FF should you decide to upgrade.
Hope this answered your question.
Now as to why the special lenses and why they ONLY fit those bodies, I think it has something to fo with an element in the lens and how far it prodtrudes into the body while focusing? One goes further than the other and would actually hit the sensor...I think. I know someone is going to correct me on this, or at least elaborate further, but I think that's a rough idea.
Good luck, and go Canon instead (50D)! [Sorry, just a Canon fan...haha] You won't be dissapointed at all with the D300, it is an amazing body.

Didn't I read somewhere that the D700 will support the DX lenses? Or am I wrong?
You're in fact correct. they do support the DX lens with a DX kind (cropped) of shot and file (smaller) size. In fact the D3 does the same.
cheers, tom
