I need a camera bag for events and on-location portrature...

It must...

-Hold two bodies, three speedlights, 5 or 6 lenses including a 70-200F2.8IS, STE@, a couple radio triggers, folding reflectors, flash diffusers, and all of the little stuff
-Have wheels
-Be carry-on compatable
-Offer weather protection in case Im caught in the rain
-Be durable

..and I am trying to stay away from the hard pelican cases....

Which camera bodies and do you need to have lenses attached to the cameras in the bag?

I have a XTi now, but for future needs it will be a pair of larger bodies....like the 50D or 5D.

I would probably like to keep a normal zoom....like the 17-55 attatched to one of the bodies. Not a must, but it would be nice.

    Jeff,

You are describing the Think Tank "Airport Security" bag. Think Tank bags are VERY well thought out and only top shelf materials used. I like them so much I just purchased the Speed Racer & Urban Disguise 60.

I finally decided trying to find one bag to fulfill all the various needs is folly. I have the Think Tank Speed Racer when I don't need to carry a lot of equipment. It does hold a surprising amount of gear though. My 5D with 70-200 f2.8 IS, or any shorter lens attached and ready to go. I carry a 24-105L, 17-40L & 1.4TC lens in the bag also. (1) 580EXII & Stoffen - ExpoDisk - 12 CF cards with the included Pocket Rocket case.

The Urban Disguise 60 (several sizes available) will hold all the above, plus several other items, including up to a 17" laptop. Two pockets on the front, but under the flap, will hold 2 spare Pro size bodies, or whatever... You can also order a harness for the Urban Disguise series if you need to transport it a long time/way.

Another great thing about these bags; they don't scream "camera bag, steal me please!"

Then, I have my "everything" super large back-pack bag. Basically, this is where I store my gear at the house & just pull gear for the other bags as needed. This bag will be replaced with the Airport Security bag as soon as the money jar fills up again rolleyes1.gif

That's more than you asked for, but I hope it helps...

Helps a lot. That is one of the bags I found while searching, but didn't see that much information...especially the list of crap in that event set-up....good grief!

Its a serious bag...and yup its pricey.....but definately is what I am wanting. I have a bage that I can use that will hold almost everything I have now, but carrying it....and reflectors...and a stand...and my 3 step ladder around on location shoots is a big drag.....

The built in cable lock and locking zippers on your example is a HUGE plus. Usually the folks I ask to look after my bag at weddings and other events value whats inside a LOT less than I do. The locks would put an end to that.

    Thanks.

PS....we could go in halves and share joint custody....rolleyes1.gif

The Tenba Large Roadie bag would be ideal as well. I have the Small version, which fits a pro body or in my case a 5D, 5 lenses (L-fatness, all with attached and reversed hoods, including 70-200 f/2.8), 2x 580 IIs and 2 more pockets for everything else (L-plate, batteries and chargers, dust blower, etc).

The Large version would add an inch of depth plus about another 35-40% in space. Both have laptop compartments. Bitchin'!

I also suggest looking at the LightWare brand of semi-hard cases. I have a MF 1420 that I believe will still qualify for carry on for many domestic flights (but you would want to verify this in advance.) You can add a wheel set to the case if you wish.

If you want to do what Denis Reggie does, you can also buy a fairly generic rolling suitcase and LightWare inserts to convert it into a carry on camera bag:

I am a real LowePro fan.....all their bags are extremely tough and well thought out....the Nature Trekker is a tad smaller than my Photo Pro but is also airline carry on approved.....I am however thinking about a change over to Pelican or Storm or such.....as I would like shear strength of these for weddings and outdoor portraits.....I have gotten so used to my Military Pistol belt and suspenders for concerts and out in nature that I prob will never carry the backpack out in the wild again...............
I am looking at the "double Height" pelicans and they do have wheels and a stowaway handle....but are not airline carry on approved............

I have a Tenba bag which would be just the ticket except the carry on part. The ThinkTank bags offer a great way to carry gear and allow you to work from them easily.

    weight vs security vs practicality
I just had to replace stolen items and bought the Think Tank Airport Security for my main piece. I really like its versatility and the different configurations for different assignments. I also carry a Lowpro sling type bag and work out of the Airport.

I have 2 D3's, 6 lenses to 70-200, 3 strobes, tools, covers, L bracket and misc filters and supplies.

The locks are very strong and a great addition to this piece with cables and zipper locks.
