Sunrise Takeoff at Bosque del Apache

Hi all...

I just got back from a weekend at Bosque del Apache, and will probably be processing pictures for weeks. Here's one that kind of jumped out at me and I think this will probably be one of my favorite shots of the trip.

takeoff.jpg

Bosque is really great, and I saw a variety of the usual species you'd expect to see there. I also ran into one particularly unusual species named "Harry". :rofl But seriously, it was great to finally meet the "amiable mod" of the forum. He really is a great guy and a hell of a photographer. I'll have to hurry and post more photos before he does. :wink

More to come...

Hey Joel, great shot. clap.gif I'm going to Wilcox this weekend to see the sandhills there ( I hope). You wouldn't happen to know if they are there in large numbers yet?

    Thanks, guys.

Nick, no didn't get bombed. The early morning takeoffs probably aren't so bad because the birds have an empty stomach. It's the evening fly-ins, after the birds have been out feeding all day that you have to worry about. :uhoh

Dan, sorry, no idea about the sand hill cranes in Willcox. There were huge numbers of them all over the place at Bosque though. Thousands, I reckon.

Great image Joel! Color, composition ... everything, just great. thumb.gif

Did you get any photos of this mysterious "Harry" critter that you referred to? After all this is the wildlife section, surely this animal would fit in this category. wings.gif

One more thought on the Harry - Amiable Mod creature. Did you see his infamous "Bird on a Stick?" I have to believe that he had the poor thing with him ... just in case! rolleyes1.gif

Thanks, Bob! Sorry, no shots of the Harry bird. It was late in the day and the lighting was bad. :cry

Thanks, guys. After they were all in the air, they simultaneously banked north for whatever reason.

We think of them as just dumb birds, but they clearly have communications mechanisms far beyond human understanding.

    Outstanding images Joel.clap.gifclap.gifclap.gif

You really captured the 'feel' of this marvelous place.

We finally had some decent light this morning and I filled up an 8 gig card in around 90 minutes. It was great to have a chance to meet you.

Thanks, Jeff. Yeah, sorry you couldn't make the trip either. It would have been great to have gotten together. Maybe we can hook up for another Salton Sea trip this year. I'm hankering to get back there as well, and it's a whole lot closer.

Howdy, Russ! wave.gif Long time.. how you been? Are you driving to Bosque? If so, it would be great to hook up if you pass through Kingman.

Harry is there right now, you guys should hook up. Can't wait to see the shots y'all get. Thanks for checking in on my thread, and I hope to see you soon.

I love the 2 take-offs, but the colors here are phenomenal, especially the light in the water.

Very nice, Joel. My first thought was the same as Nick's--cigar-sized poops from directly overhead...
