Thanks everyone!

The kayak does help in getting closer to the birds. The trick is to float towards the subjects so their isn't much movement on your part. It helps to have a rudder so you don't have much paddle motion for steering.

It also helps to have camera and glass you don't mind losing.

Well done! I am going to have to get out in my Kayak soon. The ducks just started coming in from up north and are roosting at a lake by my house.
