Any recommendations on an external(USB) DVD writer?

My internal in my laptop is burning DVD's at less than 1x, so it's dying. Not worth the hassle to fix the internal, and a have external Hard Drives for backup. Just need to burn the occasional DVD for other no photo stuff.

As far as I know, they're pretty much commodity items. I'd just pick something off the 'net with a famaliar brand that doesn't get bad reviews.

Do you need something portable to take along with your laptop or something that will sit at your desk until you need to plug it in and burn?

I ask because the price difference can be huge on those 2 options.

I have an HP external which works very well but is not very portable. I think it retails around $50 or less these days.

    Portability is not an issue.

Need a reliable solutions that is not going to burn coasters. Previously had a Micro Solution Backup burner, company went belly up and drivers etc were a pain.

I think almost any Lite-On, Iomega or HP should work OK.

    I agree.

LaCie makes nice ones for Macs, but they are not cheap.

You may need new software to drive an an external DVD burner too.
