You're right, the most efficient way of toasting is in the rising hot air.
I set my focus with a cold toaster and then went for quick snaps. The heat would've fried the camera and the vapour coming off the bread makes for a fairly efficient diffusing filter condensing on the lens

IR is a very very interesting dimension of photography, I suggest you should go out where there are strong sun and take IR.. It would be breathtaking~ Cheers~ See more of your IR shots soon~
