Just two quick shots I took of the full moon last night. It seemed like it was daylight outside it was so bright!

Ok people. Seriously. How do you do these photos? I have tried so many times to take a picture of the moon, and my results are grade school like in comparison. How do you set all your setting to get a shot like this? i.e. aperture, shutter speed, ISO, WB, Exposure, etc...

    PLEASE help me!

The first thing to remember when shooting the Moon is that it is reflected sunlight, so treat it like a daylight photo. If you allow the camera to automatically meter your exposure, the dark sky will usually fool it into overexposing the Moon. A great guide is this Moon exposure calculator. It's based on Shay Steven's application, however Shay's website is undergoing renovations, and it's not available there.

    http://www.adidap.com/2006/12/06/moon-exposure-calculator/

I'm shooting with a 40D and a 100-400L lens. I shoot at ISO 100, f/7.1, then vary my shutter speed, usually between 1/80 up to 1/250 for a full moon, although I've shot it as fast as 1/400. I've been shooting RAW more lately, my shots from tonight were shot in RAW. Using "Auto" white balance in ACR when I processed them gave me a look like Mike and the others achieved. When I selected "Daylight", it left me with that orange look, and I tweaked the color temp a little to my liking.

HOLY SHIT! Allen... excuse my language but that first image is of yours is just amazing. I wish I had a long enough lens to shoot the moon. Great job.

Holy crap. Seriously? Those settings are like daylight setting (quantity of light not quality)! Wow. Now I just need some clear sky's to try this out.

And Allen. That first photo. My god. What focal length was that at? And you suggest not using a tripod? I guess you wouldn't really NEED to with a 1/250th shutter speed.

For the people that have posted Moon pictures on here, can I see some EXIF's of these shots?

I'm seriously in awe right now of everyone's photos as this is something that I have tried and tried over and over again to do and never succeeded. A big problem I think is my lens as my longest piece of glass is the 24-105 f/4L. But either way, I should be able to get better results than I'm getting.

    To Everyone's Moon pictures: WOW...

Here are a couple old shots of mine that I took with my Canon S3IS. Most EXIF's I was looking at with these were around... 72mm, f/3.5, and between 4 sec and 1/4. With I think MAYBE a 1/10 at the absolute most. I couldn't tell ya what the ISO or WB was at.

    img4520rx7.jpg
    img4521ud8.jpg
    img4522lk6.jpg
    img4523qp1.jpg
    img4524sa6.jpg
    img4526ti2.jpg
    img4527no1.jpg
    img4528bt3.jpg

Looking back, some of these weren't THAT bad, just needed to bump the shutter speed a bit, and ideally have a longer lens. Hopefully with my 105 that'll be a little better, and I'm renting a 50-500 for my AK trip in a week from Monday so I think that should be able to get some nice shots?

Now why the f/7.1 with a 1/250 and ISO 100 vs a wider aperture and even faster shutter speed. That would work, and pretty much be the same thing right? No need for a wider DOF at infinity correct?

I did use a tripod just that you can't shoot straight up with a gimbel head so shortened two legs and sat on ground. I had forgot about the moon and saw message in other forum and by the time I went out it was overhead. It was below freezing and strong wind but managed enough stability for a couple shots. I cranked to ISO down to minimize noise and the moon was bright enough to get 1/640 at f7.1. Most lens are best at one or two stops up from wide but varies. Both had the same exif except for time.

Wow. That is so crazy. Oh, and 700mm focal length? Dang nice lens. What lens was that? And evenon that you cropped the picture WAY down to a 474x712? Or did you just resize it for the forum?

I can't believe the setting for this, no wonder my shots never turn out.

Allen I wish I could get as sharp as your 700mm lens! My Tameraon 500mm lens doesn't seem to pick up the crispness that yours is. I use a monopod...so that might be some of the problem.

Here is from this moringing just before 8am (we don't see sun till sometime after 10am). I seem to be having more problems with noise levels since the upgrade to the Nikon D300 to 1:10 firmware. HmmmmI am going to have to investigate this...

try the Canon 2x and maybe both.:D

wow I'm so jealous, wonderful photos every has taken - closest the moon has come to the earth in 15 years I read. Unfortunately we have had solid cloud cover here for the past 3 days/nights and it looks to stay that way till at least Tuesday.... congratulations on everyone who has managed to capture it!

So you guys are all out shooting the moon,
and here in Australia it's suppose to be summer and its now been raining for days rolleyes1.gif but I'm so happy for the rain I tell ya.

I'll try and have a look tonight, but the cloud coverage has pretty well blanketed the sky, and the winds have been very strong too, not good for anything but staying inside by the fire ... yet heaters on in the summer :D

Thanks for sharing, you've gotten some great shots clap.gif
