White Pelicans at the Salton Sea

Here are a few shots to show their abundance along the shore of the northeastern Salton Sea.

And a few brown pelicans, too.

I approached very slowly, with no sudden moves. The pelicans just kept preening.

But then other people marched up the beach, and the birds went on alert.

And flew away

Thanks, Joel. Yes, the hawk population has picked up--redtails, coopers(?), and northern harriers. Plus a lot of kestrels. I saw enough redtails to wonder if they are contributing culprits in the owl demise. I didn't try to go after any.

Here's a tip: on my next to last trip, I talked with a guy familiar with the area. He said the hawks flock into areas that are being plowed. I imagine that this activity could pick up soon....

I was wondering if the hawks might be getting the owls as well.

Great tip on the farmer's fields. We just need a plowing schedule. deal.gif

Nice going John. And good job getting the exposure correct with all that white plumage.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Thanks, Harry. It's a poor man's Bosque, that is, if you live in Southern California, Western Arizona, or Northwestern Mexico....
