Site issue reappears --- PHOTO NOT FOUND

I am seeing a repeat of the problem from December 21st (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=114841). I'm entering a new thread for visibility purposes.

I have been seeing photo not found images on my site again. I've seen them on my smug site, and I've seen them in my blog with photos retrieved from my smug site.

Here's a screen shot of the latest problem:
441862418_8bYXN-L.jpg

And another:
441864571_S4oKK-L.jpg
Both are HTML-only pages, with images retrieved using the random photos code on the wiki. I have also seen the problem in my blog with exact (not random) photos specified. I have not seen missing photos in my galleries.

The problem is also visible in my homepage slideshow. I haven't checked the individual gallery slideshows yet.

Fix, please! No more sad smuggy's....

    Ditto
I happened to find this by accident, I was looking at someone's gallary, didn't even know it was smug-mug until his slide show popped up with a "not found".

Looked back at mine, same thing.

    They're back.....! Darn grimlins!

I am using the random photos feed. All of the cases with the photos not found in the two screen shots I included above are from the random photos feed.

But - I just looked at my blog, and I have several photo not found images there on photos that are linked directly from my galleries. I am using custom photo sizes there, but I am explicitly identifying the photo to be displayed.

Although it shouldn't matter... I have seen this problem using both http://denise.smugmug.com and www.denisegoldberg.com. The random photos within my smug galleries don't specify the full url, but the photos embedded in my blog do (because they must...).

I don't know what that means, so I do not think so.

I've been experimenting a bit and the problem is only showing up in flash slideshows. I don't get any errors just viewing shots.

Once a given flash show is running, the same shot will show not found all the time. The thumbnail on the ribbon is always there, the shot is not. If you restart the show (e.g. either a refresh of the browser or start over from the regular page) it will usually be a different shot that is not found, or possibly all will be found. Which it picks on seems random but it feels like about 1 in 10 or so that are "not found".

Going back/forward on the slide show has no impact, still not found.

It acted just like this on 12/21. I actually didn't try it after it was "fixed" so I am not saying it ever stopped doing it, just commenting.

For what it is worth - it appears as though all of my galleries are working correctly, but my intro flash show is not. My galleries are not random display.

Hey Andy! I just found the problem on your blog too. And when I did a view source on that page, I saw a direct link to a custom-sized image from your galleries.

    Here it is:
    441900921_ecmnL-L.jpg

Keep in mind that the not found images float. That is, I can see a not found and then refresh the page and the image is there.

I saw this numerous times tonight while browsing the Photo of the day community gallerys... mostly people thumbs that the photo was not found. Noticed when I loaded my gallery several peoples thumbs that had left comments were also not found (meaning their this is me thumbnails)... headscratch.gif

I've been seeing it all day long as I've updated these 3 galleries. I've only seen it in slideshow mode, but have encountered it almost every time I've run a slideshow today.

Can we get a status? Please?
Can we get a status on this problem please? A projected resolution time?

The problem seems to me to be as bad as the occurrence on Sunday, although there don't seem to be as many people complaining about it. I am seeing it on many pages within my site, and I am seeing it on other people's sites too.

I have seen it on Vista and XP.
I have seen it on IE7, Firefox 3.0.5, and Google Chrome 1.0.154.36 (and yes, I do know that Chrome isn't a supported browser).
I have seen it on more sites than my own.
I have seen it when using random feeds.
I have seen it when directly linking to photos from my blog (and from Andy's blog, screen shot included above!).

It may be that I'm more sensitive to the issue than others because I have replaced Smug's category and subcategory pages on my site with html-only galleries, all using random feeds. The photo not found smuggy is showing up regularly, and that doesn't make me happy.

Maybe I have unrealisitc expectations here, but I really don't think so. I expect my site to show photos all of the time, not a Photo Not Found image. It reflects badly on me as someone who has published photos on the web to see Photo Not Found. To someone on the outside looking in it just looks like I don't care about my site, and that just isn't the case. I believe that no apparent attention to this issue also reflects poorly on SmugMug - it looks to me like no one there cares about smug sites that aren't showing photos when they should be. And that can't be true, can it?
    441865899_3DngB-L.jpg
I realize that some things take a while to fix. I can accept that. What I'm having a hard time understanding is that there isn't an acknowledgement of the problem or an indication that anyone is working on the problem, either in this thread or on the SmugMug Status Update blog.

I'm also having a problem with the fact that you are not showing a status message on this site to acknowledge the problem. The status message you show when you are in read-only mode at least lets people know there is a problem. Different words could be used, not saying "read-only mode", but at least informing people that there is a problem.

Back to my original request in this post - Can we get a status on this problem please? A projected resolution time?

When I have some news I'll post it here. I have given all this info to our Ops people.

The problem seems to only affect custom-size links and random feeds links, AFAIK.

More as we know it, sorry Denise and all, for the hassle :(

    Thanks for the update Andy.

Unfortunately I use both features very heavily on my site. Since it appears that custom sizes are used by the slideshow, many more sites than mine are seeing the sad smuggy.

For now I have posted my own warning message at the top of my site, and I have posted a note in my blog too. I will be happy to remove both warnings once the problem is resolved.

    Update after fix applied:
I have quite happily removed the warning message on my site and my blog post now that the problem has been solved.

FWIW, I have the same problem of missing photos on slideshows. I'm just a plain vanilla, non-customized, average, everyday, only partly clueful user who has not tinkered with customization at all.

Andy…..thank you for looking into this. I spend a lot of money of advertisement for people to go to my website. And I agree with Denise, it does reflect badly on us, and it could loose us business. And since my website is my one and only impression……..well I’m sure you understand the rest. And again thank you for helping.

Yesterday, selected photos would not appear and sometimes the Shizam's Flash Slideshow gallery would even get stuck around the 3rd photo. This would happen on ALL operating systems I have with the following browsers IE/Firefox/Safari.

Today (12:30pm EST), I just cleared everything (Temporary Internet Files/Cookies/History), and tested everything again on the following operating systems/browsers.

    *IMAC/Firefox (problem here).
*It got stuck on the 7th photo. When I pushed the 8th photo it would not come up. There are a total of 25 photos in the gallery.

Windows XP/IE 7 (All photos now appear).
Windows XP/Firefox (All photos now appear).
Windows Vista/IE 7 (All photos now appear).
    IMAC/Safari (All photos now appear).
