SO i recently got my SB-800 (and D90 and 85mm f/1.8 wooooo:barb ) BUT my problem is with the SB-800. It seems that, even when the zoom is on manual, it doesn't want to zoom. I've gone to the manual setting and turned the manual zoom on and off and on, but no success. It seems that only when it feels like zooming, it will zoom. Could the problem be the fact that I have my 85mm on there which can't zoom itself? or is there something i'm just completely missing? I've tried the manual but its not too helpful. Thank you so much

Hank, I forgot to tell ya to change the batteries and try it again. DO that first. If still nothing then this flash has to be sent back. Sounds like it has never really worked for ya...which happens. I had to send my D300 back after I killed the shutter in twenty minutes. And of course thats when we are all truly happy to be dealin with reputable folks!!

    Cheers & Happy Holidays, tom

Before you return it, I just got one to. I took some photos and noticed that the zoom wasnt working. A quick google check showed me that if the defuser cap is on then it disables the zoom and sets it to 14mm.

If you want the zoom feature to work then just take the defuser cap off and you will be off to the races.

Now I need to figure out why my 18mm to 200mm lens only shows 24mm to 105mm on the flash. More to read be back in a bit

just checked that out thanks. I found the manual a tad difficult to understand, ok alot difficult to understand.

I got so many questions, but I will keep reading before I ask.

One thing, anyone know of a link for a real simplified explanation of the SB-800???

I believe the max zoom for an SB 800 is 105mm. Since the GN # and fall off will be useless at twice the distance. You can set it to 105 and shoot at 200 mm, I've done that and it looks fine at short distances for portraits. But if you want to blast a model from accross the street with your flash, don't think it'll work as you expect it.
