Is 50mm f/1.8 with 1.4x TC possible?

I'm really looking for something relatively fast for near-court basketball and volleyball. I have the 50 and am wondering if adding a third party teleconverter to make it a 70 f/2.5 is possible. Some of the TCs say only 90mm and up... some say only f/2.8 or smaller... So what's the deal?

I realize the 85mm f/1.8 is another solution, but am looking to keep the cost down, if possible.

Thanks for the help!

I can't speak for other brands, but the Canon 1.4TC will not work with a 50mm lens.

this won't work with any teleconverter. sorry. the construction of the 50mm prime is such that there is too much lens sticking out the back. All TC's I have ever seen would hit glass before the engaging rings ever even got close. I own the same 50mm and a Sigma 1.4TC - they would never fit together.

Hey JazzyJak... Welcome to Dgrin. It would help if you'd tell us the brand of your cam. I can tell you that I've done a 2x TC with my AF 50/1.8, but only once. I really wasn't happy with the results.

Sorry, I'm putting the whole conglomeration on the front of a 20D which would give somewhere near 110mm effective length.

The Tamron 1.4x TC seems to be the best bet, but I'm not about to buy it to find out.

Thanks again for the help and the welcome1drink.gif

    Mine works - sample
Just for you (and 'cos I was curious) I just tried my D30, ef50/1.8 and Kenko 1.4x and it works. It's night here so all I could do was a quick flash test. Auto focus in a room lit by a couple of 60w bulbs. Not very scientific or artistic but yes it worked.
