Suggestion wanted for possible upgrade

Hey all,
Time to upgrade and I could use some help. I looked for a thread, if you know of one please let me know.
Anyway. My son needed a new machine, so I gave him mine. So I would have to upgrade. :rolleyes
What I am looking at is the AMD Phenom X4 9750 and a MSI K9A2 Platinum or an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 with a Gigabyte GA-EP45T-DS3R.
I will be running 8 gig with XP 64 or maybe Vista 64 (only if I have too). The advantage to the AMD is that I have DDR2 memory, wouldn't have to buy any.
So which would be better?
Second I have been told that both boards will support 16 gigs. Ture?
