White Tailed Hawk

I recently visited the Central Texas Coast again. My family went to the Texas State Aquarium while I visited the Fennessey Ranch. Anyhow, the weather was horrible the whole time so the lighting conditions were difficult to say the least, but as we were leaving the area I spotted this white tailed hawk on a nice perch just off the side of the highway. My wife was driving and she knows the routine: Turn around at the nearest cross-over, head back, turn around again and hope the bird (hawk) is still there. It was.

Once again, the lighting was next to nothing with extremely overcast weather, but here it is. They are quite handsome hawks. The Texas coast and far south Texas is about the only place in North American these hawks can be found.

Now I just need to find one in good light as these are my only images of one in the wild that I have.

Thanks for posting these, Stephen. Never seen one of these. In spite of lighting conditions you did a good job of capturing all of the characteristic colors etc. for clear ident. Not bad for your first captures of this species thumb.gif

Up here with that kind of light on a regular basis, I certainly understand your pain. But you did a good job capturing the right details; it is a very handsome raptor, indeed!

Thanks Dave. Here's hoping I can find one in 2009 that is in good light.

Damn fine shots for the lighting conditions, especially #2.
