looking for messenger like bag for lenses

hey all.

The type of photography I do is often of the run-stop variety. Which is to say sports photography where I am often changing lenses very rapidly between arenas (horse shows, usually two rings going on at once). So I'm looking for a bag that:

1. does NOT need to hold the camera or tripod
2. DOES have 3 or so padded holding cells (ones that close to secure the lenses in place are a pain in the a$$ so at least ability to remove or disable them)
3. is messenger bag style so I can carry it around AND access it quickly on my hip/side as needed

and 4.
adjustible 'cells' for the lenses since I'll have all differences sizes (but I can live with whatever might work'.

I figure something like this MUST exist but ... I'm clueless. Any suggestions? Do the bazillion dollar homes get to this level? Again I don't need it to hold the CAMERA, but just lenses w/ padding in between. I've a 3 Million Dollar home but it requires putting lenses in and out of their padded cases before dumping them in there (time consuming) and only holds 2-3 depending on size.

ttttttttttttttttttttttttthank you! I've a full horse season ahead of me and I'm trying to figure out how to do this without exhausting myself :D

Could a Crumpler 5 Million Dollar home suffice? I haven't seen one in person to judge, but hopefully someone else here has ... or seen something even better :D

    Shootsac
Have you seen the Shootsac? It has 6 pockets that are made just as you describe of neoprene and has a removable cover. Originally made for the wedding photographer. I have one and I love it.

edit to add: very nice and exactly the notion - a shoot sack :) however, at over 3x the price of a 5 million dollar home... well.. yeah :S still, on my dream list now. thanks!

There are times when I just don't NEED everything or don't want to advertise EVERYTHING. For those times, I use a messenger bag (Tumbuk2) w/ a Crumpler Bucket insert. It's fine for several lenses and a flash w/ a few odds and ends(cards, batteries etc). Before I found the Crumpler Bucket insert I used a towel and some lens wraps to the same end.

I find a padded strap is a must and keeping the bag light as possible is better on my aging back when walking about for hours and hours. I have a sling bag too, pretty much the same story(wrt the aging back).YMMV

Can't help on a bag suggestion, but do you ever carry two cameras? At a horse show with two or more rings, or a harness event trying to cover two or three driving obstacles, I couldn't manage such a frequent lens change plus the moving around. A side issue is the amount of dust around when the going is dry and it's being kicked into the air. Always interested in how others work at shows where the distance between shooting points is an issue.

I did 2 Marine Homecoming events this year and I used 2 body/lens combinations just because I knew I would have to change instantly. I used a "camera holster" to hold the lesser used system safely until I needed it.

I didn't read all the suggestions already, but Crumpler actually started as a bunch of bike messengers in Australia, making messenger bags. If you want a messenger like bag, you can't really do much better than get a true Crumpler messenger, and add one of their photo inserts to it...

the complete seed bucket will hold a fair bit:
    https://www.crumplerbags.com/flash/flash.aspx#/english/product-details/bucket-(complete-seed)-bu04a.html

and fits perfectly into either a fux deluxe or, obviously, complete seed (both of those are proper messenger bags, that fit right, not like a "shoulder" bag meant to LOOK like a messenger bag)

best part about this setup is when not shooting, store the bucket at home, and fill the seed with ice and a six pack (they're fully waterproof) nod.gif

not yet :) but if things go the way I want, a D3 will be added, with the D50 as a lovely backup.

I was looking at the 5 mil home, but your ideas are very valid -- the shoulder strap is better made for supporting that sort of weight AND as someone else pointed out, I will eventually be shooting 2 cameras so the extra room will be needed. They both seem so LARGE to me, but considering the lenses I'll get for the FX capabilities of the D3 and older DX ones I'll save for those very dusty days .... I'm gonna need it.

    thanks!!

Not a bag, but a belt system.

Click link, then choose either "Modular Components", or "Skin Components"

I was going to suggest ThinkTank photo myself. I've been looking at the Urban Disguise but agree with rwells that the Modular or Skin components may be closer to what you are looking for.

I have one of THESE (The Boda Bag)

There are two sizes. They are meant to do exactly what you're asking, but have two chambers, one which can hold two smaller zooms with a velcro divider. Totally great bag. It's not a messenger bag, but smaller. Holds a 70-200 f/2.8 with hood.

Wow ! you guys are amazing and there's lots of choices for me to sort through and consider what my needs are -- now and in the longer term. Heck, might end up with two different bags depending on the costs. :D

    *love* thank you!

More then likely you will end up with two or more bag systems. It is very hard to come up with a one bag solution in the long run. It usually ends up being a compromise one way or another.

Well, I've three bags already, although one I never use anymore. but I can see at least 2-3 new systems coming out of this current research clap.gif

What about a Lowepro Stealth Reporter or Slingshot? (Various sizes).

Stealth Reporters are messenger-type bags and the Slingshot (very popular) is a sling bag with one strap...

I had both, kept the stealth reporter and got rid of the sling shot... don't like so much weight on one shoulder... but might be ok with you if you are just putting in lenses... very easy to access without taking the bag off.

I was already planning on a slingshot for every day use/mt biking/etc, 100 model though since it'll be just a camera+lens and MAYBE a 2nd lense, that's it.

HOWEVER, I have not yet heard of/seen the Stealth Reporters although I know Pictureline carries a massive range of packs..... thanks!! :ivar bowdown.gif

Holy cr*p the Complete Seed system is ... extensive. But definitely will get use! I ordered that (in red, yay!) along with a 5 million dollar home (also in red...) and picked up a slingshot last week. It's gonna be heavy at times (the Complete Seed system) but damned secure and safe too. And ...um.. well hung. I mean from the shoulder and balance and all that.

I still feel like it should have come with an instruction booklet!
