Strobes and sports

Was at an NBA game last week and noticed the rash of pocketwizards and strobes up in the catwalk. With most cameras having a sync speed of 1/250, how does this affect the photog's need for faster shutter speeds? How much ambient exposure is made on a camera set up for strobes?

In a strobe situation, the strobes are overpowering ambient light. The camera's exposure will typically be 2-3 stops below ambient. The burst from the strobe does the freezing of the action and not shutter speed.

Pocket Wizard Multi-max, multiple channels, and also be custom programmed. Strobes are not always available to every photographer. Usually SI, Getty, AP, Reuters etc get first crack. Large Media organizations, Newspapers etc. also have use of the strobes.
