Heres the background on theses pic's. Wind is blowing 35 mph and is -35 degrees. I couldn't be outside very long but wanted to photograph the rainbow. I have never seen a rainbow in the middle of Winter with snow on the ground and BLOWING. So any help on how to make ,if possible, better. Thanks in advance.

    p274354001-5.jpg

    Original adapted in Camera Raw:
    - increased exposure about a stop
    - increased vibrancy and clarity about 30%

New Layer>Gradient black/white over the sky; changed blending of this layer to soft light

    Noise reduction using Nik DFine

    Sharpening using Filter?Other>High Pass

Saved as 8-bit file in jpg.

Very cool shots! Both in pun and actuality.

I believe this is called a Sun Dog.

I thought I'd take a crack at this. It's a lovely photo! Whatever you decide to you, you need to bring out the color of the rainbow. Increasing the contrast and brightening the snow is one way to do this.

Here's what I tried in Photoshop:
    1. Removed noise with Imagenomic using Landscape setting.
    2. Added hue/saturation layer and desaturated the blues to remove the bluish colorcast in the snow.
    3. Added a curves adjustment layer. Used CS4 default setting "Increase contrast". This was a bit strong, so I adjusted the opacity to 45%.
    4. Added a new layer: Layer > New > Layer; Mode: Overlay; Fill With Overlay Neutral Color: checked.
    5. "Painted" the snow on the new layer using Dodge Tool to bring out its whiteness. Dodge Tool setting: Range - Midtones; Exposure - 50%.

I'm not 100% convinced on the crop because you're chopping off part of the rainbow. If you had clouds in the photo in lieu of that rainbow then the crop would be fine but that rainbow is just so pretty that it's a shame to chop off the top it.

Try cropping closer of the top of that rainbow. mwink.gif

I saw something about rainbows in the Margulis "Lab" thread, do a search and I think you'll find the howto (or at least ONE howto) there... :)

Of course you can do manual selection and masking, so I am not really sure exactly what you're after... Just PP to enhance the rainbow, or more?

I am hoping to be able to make this photo pop. I am hoping for it to be good enough to enter in the Dgrin challanges.
