Suggestions for good tripods

Any suggestions on a good tripod? Or I guess also, which or what features should I look for or avoid. I haven't really used one before since I've been using a p+S in the past. It will be used with a 40d which I recently got. I know they can get heavy and really expensive. I'd prefer to spend less on one than the camera but want the best for the money. Also I'd like to learn some landscape stuff so it would be nice if it was semi portable if I was hiking into someplace.

Thanks

Tripods are just "legs" and the head is a seperate consideration. Many times you can get a tripod/head combination, but there is no combination that serves all purposes.

What application will you use the tripod and head for most of the time?

As a for instance, I have several very short and cheap tripods that I use for lighting setups, i.e. they hold slaved electronic flashes. I just got a tripod that I use with a panoramic head. I have some old and heavy Slik sticks that I use with a nice Manfrotto video head for both sports and general photography, as well as video. I have another inexpensive "Ambico" legs and 3 way head that I use for knock-around use when the Slik/Manfrotto is too heavy or I don't want to risk it.

The more explicit you are about your application(s), the more specific we can be in recommendations.

Here is an article justifying the high cost of a good tripod
    http://www.bythom.com/support.htm

Then again as Ziggy has said recommendations for a good tripod can be heavily influenced by the type of shooting you will be using it for, and the weight of the equipment it will need to support. It's fairly common not to want to spend more for a tripod then you would on a body, or a fast lens, but in the end a good tripod will do more to ensure sharp pictures then spending that money on a body or lens.
