Step Up rings

I've been shopping around for a new lens and one that I am considering takes 52mm filters. To make it compatible with my 58mm filters, I know I need to purchase a step-up ring for it. My question is, when I also purchase a UV filter for the new lens, do I buy it to fit the lens or the step up ring?

Thanks!

I would recommend getting the UV filter to fit the lens. IMHO, the UV len's primary purpose is to protect the front element of the lens. By fitting it to the lens, your stepup ring is available for use on other lenses, and you can keep the UV on the lens 100% of the time. Also, be aware that when you stack rings/filters/etc., you may create a vignetting situation based upon the focal length.
