I looked at this thread earlier and came back to it for the chance to see that second shot again - light, DOF and composition all very well done.
As for the first, I'm a bit bothered by her eyes being lost in the shadows. Also, the angle of the light seems to have accentuated some marks in her skin.

I am with you on some level with the first image, but I wanted dark and lost... what better way than to hide the eyes in shadow. It's interpretation but I do wish I shot it with the eyes lit to see a difference, unfortunately I spent my time setting up other crazy ideas before finishing what I had started.
