I love the concept of the Black Rapid system, but it does seem like something that shouldn't be *that* expensive to make (yah yah, Pro photogs will pay Pro prices for Pro equipment, don't get me started).

thanks for the clone link. now i gotta decide if it's worth the extra money for the r-strap, heh. get padding + dual r-strap possibilities, but that is maybe 20-30% of my shooting. tho, that y strap looks a bit expensive for a strap w/ a ring basically, heh
camera straps
Some years ago, I noticed my then-neighbor, Galen Rowell using an Optech stap and I borrowed it for a few minutes and noticed that the thick Neoprene stretched and made my heavy LeicaR (long time ago) feel lighter. I thanked him, bought one, and have used them ever since. The Optech straps have several different types of camera attachments, and I eventually settled on one model, but there are lots of different ways. If you have a camera shop near you that sells them, try it. I have a Smug Mug strap also, not quite as weight absorbing.

yeah, I have an optech now, and was about to get another one (non-QR because a-I've accidentally released it, and b-need something longer)
The strap feels good, but over several hours, it gets to ya. Though, I have the wide neck strap, the other narrower one might be better, and has a seamed/finished padding area. Mine is not.
After reading this thread . . .
I've order a Black Rapid coupler kit. I'm off to Vietnam and Laos in September, so I'm hoping this arrangement will help carrying a 5D2 and a 1D3. I also have a wedding coming up, so I'll definitely give the Black Rapid straps a workout there. I'll let you know if they do the job.:D

Anyways, thankfully I'm not the only one who thinks this way. Here's three DIY solutions:

There's some guy who makes and sells a clone... here we go:
