I do not know why, but this looks like a young one to me....
Female due to lack of red 'stache.
Seriously underexposed the photo - another thru my living room window, and just shot away without looking at the data!!!

Its definitely a female but its ahrd to say if its a young one or not. They are 17-20 inches at maturity. You would have the best idea to its size. Good capture considering the shooting conditions.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

    Thanks, Harry and AJ

They must be nesting really close by (might explain all of the drumming on trees a few weeks ago) because one or the other or both are in the yard every day now. I am not sure this is the same female that was here this winter, I actually think this one is a bit smaller. In any case, I may jsut have to make a blind and sit and wait for them to get a shot outside!

Wish I knew how to find the nest....

    She looks young.
The plumage doesn't look like it has molted yet. She still has that 'scruffy' first plumage look about her.
You're lucky to get them in that close... I have to get out in the woods, and then I hear them more often than seeing them. Good catch!!:D

    Hi shaman
Thats what it is! The male and female make daily appearances now - caught a large female on cf card this morning ( i actually got out the door without her flying away today!), and hope to process the images in a bit - hope to be able to tell if it is the same bird as this one. My guide book says they nest early April, so it isn't inconceivable that there are fledglings about now.

I do feel very priviledged(sp?) to share my space with them and all the other critters that visit. Huge, (HUGE) coyote the other night - found something worth eating in the back yard, and caused a great deal of upset among the magpies.
I am thankful for each day here, and if I have to give up this house I will always be happy that I was here for a while, anyway.

Ann, that is such a nice way of looking at life.

great photos you have been doing, too.

I am grateful too, for where I live, but if I had to move...........I would just die.

    or want to.

you will be right where you are for as long as you want, as that is your attitude. Refreshing and interesting.
