I have never really posted to the forum before so bare with me if I am posting in the wrong place. I have had a small business for a little over a year now and It has been called "Tams Cam". The business has grown now and I was thinking I should change the name. I wanted it to sound more professional. My name is Tammie Stephens and most people misspell my last name so I was thinking that might be a problem. So anyone have some great name ideas??

I shoot alot of sports for the school, and senior portriats and some weddings. I have a photojournalistic style and prefer that to the more traditional stuff....

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tammie

Names are kind of a personal thing. Find one that fits your personality. A lot of people choose a business name based on their name and while there is nothing wrong with it, you also limit your options.
Let's say one day that you wish to retire. It is far easier to sell a generic named business vs your name photography.
Also keep in mind the possibilities of expansion in the future. Make sure your company name can grow with you.

I think you are right to change the name from "Tams cam"... sounds like "Tam scam" mwink.gif

In the process of setting up, I went for 'Osiris Photography' but got fed up having to spell 'Osiris' to people on the phone so settled on 'Stuart Walker Photography'. There are other Stuart Walkers out there doing photography, and a load more doing other things, but the name does well enough in Google (if you're looking.. I'm not the Photobox or Alamy.com one rolleyes1.gif)

How about using your initials? TS Photography? Better still if you have a middle name but check Google to see how much competition there is with the same name!

    Name
Hey Guys, Thanks for the resonse. I really apprciate the feedback. Its funny that you came up with Tams Scam.... That is one that I never thought of! I shoot a fair amount of sporting events at th high school and this name seems to fit with the kids however I have covered a few weddings this year and I felt that I needed a name that was a little more professional. I will keep praying that God sends me the right words...headscratch.gif

I second the "having to spell it for people sucks".

That having been said, I've built the company enough that at this point it would be hard to change. Gah.

Would it be bad to find a more professional company name, then keep Tams Cam as the name as it relates to sports work?

You could make TamsCam a seperate section on the website, or for the wedding photography don't even use SM for the front end. Buy a flashy template that looks really nice and just have a link to a category on TamsCam for existing customers to see their photos. It looks like two seperate things but it's not. Then on the Tams Cam site you could put up a banner ad for your wedding site.

    Just an idea.
