The morning paper shows a Pine Flycatcher spotted at the Choke Canyon Reservoir, south of San Antonio. It's supposed to be the first time this bird has ever been seen in the US; it normally lives in Mexico and south. I'm off to see it, hopefully; will post pics if I get anything!

Must be due to climate change. Hopefully you'll get the shots and share them.

This has been all over the Texas birding community. An acquantaince of mine has already gotten pics of it. Frankly it looks like any empid. But the experts are sure that it is a Pine Flycatcher. It's pretty neat. The Green Jays and Great Kiskadees are also moving farther and farther north plus where I live, I have pics of a two crested caracaras that strayed up into the D/FW area. That is not completely out of the ordinary but it is unexpected.

Unfortunately, I did not get any shots of the flycatcher. When I arrived at the spot, there were 10 or so other birders and photographers. One guy had the largest, longest lens I have ever seen. I asked about it and he said "it's a 600mm." I told him it looked like 6000! He said it feels like that by day's end. I did see one man's photo of the bird on his LCD--he had quite a nice capture.

There was no "official birder" there and I don't know who made the official call on this bird. Maestro Stephen may know. The group present when I was there seemed to disagree over whether the bird we were seeing was truly the rare flycatcher. So, I saw a bird at the right spot . . . but I can't add it to my life list b/c I don't know for certain what I saw. ne_nau.gif

Stephen - I was certain you already knew this story before I posted. Will you come down to see it? Let me know if you do and perhaps we could meet up. As you said, some believe this is "an empid"--I didn't even know what that was! My birding knowledge is veryyyyyyy rusty--I must get some studying in so I don't feel like a total noob around other birders. After all, it's something I've done for +35 years!

I did take a lot of other pics--will post anything worthwhile.

    Cheers,
    Lauren
