I've shot the moon before with limited success.

How about some tips on better shots? These just don't do it for me.

    Shooting the "Wolf Moon"
    Scott.

I'm in the same situation. Lots of opportunities, but little success.

If you Google "photographing the moon," you'll find a lot of resources. The recommendations that I found useful on my last and best attempt came from Eric Salsbery's blog. Eric is a Utah (now Nevada) photographer and SmugMug user.

Eric details shooting the moon during the daytime, nighttime and tweaking levels in PS.

    Good luck!

on a whim the other night I grabbed my 400mm lens and 2x tc to try some moon shots since it was abnormally clear. this one was taken @ f11 1/125, iso200 but slightly out of focus. the tips in the linked blog post seem pretty good, definitely can't rely on your meter for such an exposure.

    I tried the moonset this morning with my Siggy 300 2.8 + 2XTC - D90 (1600 iso)

first time I used the 2X and wasn't satisfied with any of the images. Here's one:

That looks fine. What were you expecting? Remember, when the sun is on the horizon that like, you're going to get a ton of atmospheric distortion.

I saw that same amazing moon-set this morning over the mountains. I'd just woken up, looked out the window, screamed for my wife and kids and we all sat there and watched it drop. I didn't even bother scrambling for my camera gear because it was moving so fast I knew I'd miss it anyway. At least you got it. thumb.gif
