Pictures of Emmy in the field and I have a question

I got to take emmalie outside briefly yesterday for a small walk. Of course I took the new toys to see what it could do. I am so impressed. I actually printed off 4x6's straight from the memory card and they really didn't need any retouching. So cool!

*My question is....prime lens and zoom lens....is one better to have? While I don't particularly care for the fact that I have to move closer or farther away with the 50mm, I think I'm seeing a slight difference in the images between the 50mm and my 18-55mm lens. Am I silly or am I really seeing a slight difference?

Cute girl you have there! In my opinion I would have used my 70-200 zoom. I might see a slight difference in the pictures but not hugely really noticeable with the len's use used. I save my prime for the studio and some other things. When chasing after little kids for portraits outside it is hugely helpful to have the long zoom. I can stand back out of their way and just click away as they are running around. Looks like a nice place you live! Have a great day....

Julie, I always enjoy your photographs. These are no different. I read, in Popular Photography, that when dealing with harsh sunlight, the pop up flash works well to counter the hars shadows. They said to set it for fill, and give it like a - 1 1/3 ev and it'll work fine. Saw some sample pics and they don't look flash blasted at all.

In regards to red eye, they said it's not so prominent in the sun. Something to keep in mind for the next time you are out at noon. ;-) thumb.gif

I would look for an f2.8 zoom. Nice budget friendly f2.8 zooms are the Tamron 28-75MM (~$350 new), and the Tamron 70-200 (~$700 new). I have both and I use them a lot. But I do have the Nikon 85MM f1.8 on my wishlist as well.

If you go for the 28-75MM, make sure to get the BIM version (Built in Motor) so it will work with your D40 as well. The 70-200 is new enough that it only comes with the BIM. I can share portraits from each with a D90 if you wish.

BTW, I'm a transplanted Hoosier myself. I'm from a bit down HWY 46 in Ellettsville. My dad still teaches at IVY tech in Terre Haute.

I would love to see your images. How far is Ellettsville from Terre Haute? It is always nice to meet another Hoosier. :D

Shots with the f2.8 Tamron zooms
Ellettsville is between Spencer and Bloomington on Hwy46. The High school there is Edgewood. I actually live in Iowa now, but I get back home several times a year. Maybe we'll have to have you do a family shoot on one of our visits.

Here are a few shots of my daughter. Two of these shots are at f3.5 so you can see the shallow depth of field, and a third at f11 so you can see peak sharpness.

This is the Tamron 28-75MM f2.8 lens, shot at 55MM at f3.5 with a Nikon D50

A studio shot with the same lens at 44MM at f11 with the D90

And a more recent pic with the Tamron 70-200MM f2.8 shot at 200MM at f3.5.
