that sandhill cranes keep their legs extended behind them when they are flying?

When they come in for a landing they tuck their legs into their bodies

then when they are ready to land they extend their legs again

as they make their "graceful" landing

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Pretty cool Harry.. I never new that, but then again I've never seen a SC around these parts. Besides Bosque there are a gazillion in southeast Arizona at Willcox but not a single one around here.

    Nice shots Harry.

I have not seen them act like that in the great white north.

I see them when they're still 100 feet off the ground drop their legs and drift around in the breeze
til they decide where they want to land.

    not always
Harry, first off, great photos as always but I have closely observed lots of sandhills and always check that very thing - I used to think they always flew with their legs extended but have observed sandhills migrating and just flying from one feeding spot to the next and some do in fact keep their legs tucked, not lots of them grant you, but a few do seem to fly that way. I used to use extended legs as one of my "identifiers" for cranes but no longer. I do like the photo with the legs tucked just before landing as it shows the tuck just ready to extend forward. Good job.
