2 Nightshots from Paris...

Hi all,

Having recently returned from a 6 week stint in Europe, I have finally had the chance to begin editing a few pictures - this is going to take forever ! Here are two night shots I did in Paris - they're not my favorite mainly because I think I could have improved on the composition as well as gotten better skies, but I did what I could. Please let me know what you think would improve the shots so I can either go back to the old PS workroom, or have an excuse to return and reshoot

Good shots
I'm full of envy - I would be thrilled to repeat my Paris trips.
Nite shots are hard to improve - they usually are either good or bad.
Your's are good:-)

The first one is a great shot. The second one WOW! You should find out which studio is making "The Divinci Code" movie and sell them that shot for their promotions.

I love the lighting in the second shot . It has almost a 3d feeling to it.

I like the light and the composition in the second shot also. The first shot might have been improved by taking four or five images from exactly the same vantage point and with the same exposures and then blending them in PS to diminish any color noise and smooth out the waters surface even more.

Hi Gayle,

Gee, flattery will get you...everywhere . Thank you for the comments - I actually loved the DaVinci Code, but had no idea there was a movie in the works. Can't wait to see that one. In the meantime, I'll have to keep processing Paris photos!

Hi Eric,

The lighting in the second picture is a little interesting: I had intended to shoot something else around sunset, but when that didn't pan out I hoofed it over to the Louvre. I had about 30 minutes to shoot there because at midnight they turn off all the city lights. I managed to take this shot - which is actually 15 different stacked/blended images, and another one which I'm working on before the lights disappeared. The sky was not the greatest and was a bit too dark in the shots I took, so I tried to apply a light warming filter in PSE.

Hi Pathfinder,

Thank you for looking and for the comments. The funny thing is that I actually did stack & blend that first shot with the boat and Seine river! I did the usual of 3 sets of 5 photos made famous by the likes of Luben Solev. After looking at the picture I decided that there was too much empty space in the foreground, so I went back to one of the pictures I thought was not usefull: a 2 second exposure that caught the boat with blue lights passing through the frame. I used a layer mask to add the boat in, but I see that some of the water to the left of the boat wasn't masked out and retained its wavy look.

Nice shots, Kevin! I agree, the second one really is a "WOW"! Great composition and gorgeous colors!

I'm leaving next Sat (5/28) for a two-week trip to France and will spend a couple of days in Paris before heading to the west coast. If you have any thoughts or suggestions I'd love to hear them!

If any other Dgrinners will be there holler! Maybe we can hook for for croissants and coffee somewhere! :

I appreciate your comments and thank you for taking the time to look. I'm sure you'll have a superb time in France as it is quite lovely this time of year - have you been before? In terms of shooting ideas, I suppose that depends on what kind of photography you like (I like nightshots, and thus my 2 pictures). The architecture of Paris is mesmerizing, as are the more popular tourist sites. Notre Dame is breathtaking as they have just finished cleaning the front; the Pont des Arts by the Louvre is always full of young couples drinking wine around sunset, the Louvre - one could spend all day shooting this enormous and intricate palace. I will say this though: practically everyday at sunset (around 9pm) the city is bathed in the most fantastic yellow/gold light. This is THE PERFECT Light for all types of shots, but especially for portraits. I will post an example for you soon...until then, good luck with the preparations for your trip, it's going to be great!
