Need help on lens repairs

I just got off the phone with Comet Camera where I dropped my 50mm f/1.4 off to be repaired. They said that the USM motor is busted! :cry I haven't used the lens since the wedding in August.

The worst part is that... they can't repair it because they cannot get the parts for it from Canon! Should I try calling Canon directly? The repair shop said I could try, as they might be holding the parts for their place, but they can't get a hold of one for my repairs!

If you need the lens, I don't see where you have an alternative. Calling Canon won't cost you anything but a little time and you might be able to talk them out of a psuedo quote over the phote.

I called them. They said send it in and they will check out the problem. Argh!! A broken 50 is like a broken a finger! Well I know what I have to do next and hopefully Canon can repair the lens at a reasonable cost.
