Have you tried to pull the purples out in the first shot? That and a little less of the upper left, and the color one would be far better than the B&W...IMHO, of course

Ah yes... a difficult lesson for me to learn too. As for these images; of the first two I prefer the color version. But your re-do really seals the deal.
What about taking the redone colour one, and doing the b&w conversion on it on a separate layer and then letting some of the colour bleed through? I wonder what that would look like with this shot.
