Installing a split image focus screen

I'm considering purchasing a Katz Eye split image focus screen for my Canon 30D. Does anyone have any experience with doing the installation DIY? Instructions available online make it seem rather doable. But I wanted to find out if anyone knows of any hidden surprises. I'm pretty good with mechanical stuff (I've even successfully cleaned the sensors in both my DSLR's...:wink ). Found some positive info about the Katz Eye stuff in the archives, but couldn't find anything about the installation process.

I'd rather not do it myself if there's a good likelyhood for major failure. :cry

Thanks!

Do be aware that Partial and Spot metering may be affected. (Probably will be affected depending on the scene.)

There is some danger to your camera but certainly no more than the normal replacement of the focus screen.

If you have never worked with very tiny parts inside of a complicated and sensitive area this might not make a good first project.

If you have worked on tiny sensitive parts before, just remember the usual rules about dropping stuff inside the camera and this time of year do watch static electricity, following normal static discharge and grounding technique.

If you do decide to proceed make sure that you do not remove the shim. If you do remove the shim, or if it happens to come loose as you remove the screen, it's a little extra to get it back into position. Make sure that the parts are reinstalled in exactly the correct orientation as some of the parts can be reinserted incorrectly.

Take your time and work on a clean, flat and light colored surface so that parts don't get lost.

I use a focus/viewfinder magnifier to help with critical focus. I also use the live view feature when time allows and I'm using a camera with that feature.

    Hi aj986s.

I have the Katz Eye Plus, Split Prism, with microprism collar, OptiBrite treatment, 3rds grid. On my 40D.

I have had it since July 08.

It is a high quality accessory. Installation is a cinch. Customer service outstanding.

The documentation online discusses effects on metering, and gives general advice and advice specific to your camera..

This focus screen will benefit you if you use MF a lot, especially indoors. Have no hesitation getting it.
